Velvet holds light differently from satin — it absorbs rather than reflects, so the colour reads deeper as the room darkens. Ruching and shirring pull the body in from a high waist before the skirt releases. There is a lot of stretch in it, which is why it sits close without pulling. The styling can stay simple.

Bust — around the fullest part, tape flat across the back.
Waist — around the narrowest part of the natural waist.
Hip — around the fullest part, roughly 20cm (8in) below the waist.
Length — from the shoulder seam straight down to the hem.
